I've been thinking about straps lately and today I worked on a curvy clutch by keyka lou which had the option of straps.
This is a very simple clutch with magnetic snaps for closure. The flap makes the clutch look very classy. The size is quite small, maybe just enough to put your handphone, keys and a small wallet. Oh, I learnt from keyka lou that the term used for the exterior fabric is FOCUS FABRIC. I've often used "main fabric" or "outer fabric". I do wonder what other sewers call the exterior fabric. Please tell me!
In case you're wondering, my focus fabric is a Michael Miller fabric by Patty Young.
Here's a look at the inside. You might be able to tell I used batting because this little clutch looks padded. Of course the padding makes it a little hard to sew. I kept snipping off the extra batting to ease the bulk and soon I was covered with batting dust. The problem with using a strap (it's detachable btw) for this clutch is that since the closure is via magnetic snap, it's not too secure. So the strap is quite dangerous to have since the likelihood is you're bound to SWING the clutch possibly spewing your belongings all over the pavement. Or am I just paranoid?
To overcome my paranoia but still keep my strap and clutch, I decided to turn the clutch into a zip pouch. Here it is sans flap.
Yes, my focus fabric is by momo. Oh dear, I like saying focus fabric now. How do I turn a clutch into a zip pouch? Actually I just sew it like a regular zip pouch.
Let's see the inside. The lining fabric is another Michael Miller fabric. Geez, I do use a lot of Michael Miller fabric, don't I? Hmmm... now I like saying Michael Miller. With a zipper closure, the strap (also detachable) can be swung without inhibition.
Okay, maybe next time I do a zip clutch with a flap?
This pic is just to give you an idea of the size.
I have 2 craft markets in November. Must get busy, busy. See you!

I call it main fabric or outer fabric too--never heard of focus fabric.
I adore Michael Miller as well :)
What a awesome clutch! I am new to fabric in the sense of your question. So I don't know a answer:)
I am a crazy quilter, but recently want to expand to sewing projects for myself and this is the route my daughter is interested in so i want to learn so I can teach her. I have started following your and a few other blogs to learn more. Your projects are so cute. I am feeling the sense of getting addicted to fabric through the blogs I am following. I had no idea there are so many gorgeous beautiful, I want to sew with them cotton print fabrics out there:)
I like the zipper one too!!
Thanks for such a great blog:)

You're hilarious! Thank you! I can easily picture you swinging your pouch as you walk and be devastated realizing you lost all the content of it on the way... I'do the same by the way ;-)
